Griffin History

***GRIFFIN HISTORY***

 General Lewis Lawrence Griffin founded Griffin in 1840. General Griffin was the first president of the Monroe Railroad & Banking Company, which was chartered in 1833. Griffin was a rail and textile community. Currently, Griffin is home to approximately 24,000 people with 58,000 in Spalding County. Griffin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

John Henry "Doc" Holliday began his career in dentistry in downtown Griffin. In 1887 Doc died of tuberculosis in a Colorado sanitarium. A distant cousin of Doc's that still lives in Griffin has started the "Doc Holliday Society". To get further details please call 770-412-9180.
