History of Griffin
General Lewis Lawrence Griffin founded Griffin in 1840. General Griffin was the first president of the Monroe Railroad & Banking Company, which was chartered in 1833. Griffin was incorporated in 1843, and was a rail and textile community. Currently, Griffin is home to approximately 23,000 people in the city with 58,268 in Spalding County. Griffin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"THE GRYPHON" is the symbol for Griffin....a Gryphon is an animal recognized for its strength and vigilance with the body of a lion, an eagle's head, long ears and an eagle's claw to show that one must combine intelligence and strength. Of course, the Gryphon only existed in the imagination of eastern and classical times.

John Henry "Doc" Holliday began his career in dentistry in downtown Griffin. In 1887 Doc died of tuberculosis in a Colorado sanitarium. A distant cousin of Doc's that still lives in Griffin has started the "Doc Holliday Society".
